In response to reports of potential price increases for beverages served in Moroccan cafes, the Competition Council has announced in a press release on Tuesday its intention to launch an investigation.
The Council’s preliminary findings suggest that certain cafe owners and managers may be considering raising prices, a move that could violate competition laws.
The Competition Council emphasized that pricing of goods and services is determined by free competition, as outlined in Law 104.12 on Price Freedom and Competition.
Any attempts to manipulate prices through concerted actions or agreements, whether explicit or implicit, are strictly prohibited.
The Council further clarified that any discussions among professionals or their organizations regarding prices or profit margins are illegal. Such agreements can hinder fair competition and artificially inflate or lower prices, harming consumers.
If the preliminary findings are confirmed, the Competition Council will initiate a formal investigation and take all necessary legal measures to address the situation.
This commitment aligns with the Council’s constitutional and legislative mandate to safeguard fair competition and protect consumer interests.
The potential price hikes at cafes have raised concerns among consumers, who fear an unjustified increase in their daily expenses.
The Competition Council’s investigation aims to determine the validity of these concerns and ensure that pricing remains fair and competitive.
This investigation comes in response to a group of cafes and restaurants announcing their intention to raise beverage prices due to escalating costs.
While some professionals joined this move, others expressed their disapproval, and some consumers have accepted the change.
Sources had told Hespress that cafes and restaurants that have implemented price increases have generally been met with understanding and acceptance from customers. This suggests that consumers are willing to bear the additional cost, at least for now.
On the other hand, a significant number of cafe and restaurant owners refrained from raising prices, opting not to participate in the trend that started in the city of Kenitra.
Professional organizations in the sector see no issue with the current price increases as long as the justifications are “reasonable” and consumers “accept the situation.”
However, they also emphasize the importance of “free competition” and the “economic decision-making autonomy” of cafe and restaurant owners.
