Morocco’s national futsal team, led by Hicham Dguig since 2010, is in the spotlight these days after an outstanding performance in the 2024 African Cup of Nations, making their way to the final and aiming for their third continental triumph in its history.

Morocco holds the 8th position globally as of April 20, 2024, a status unchanged since September 2022, with a secure total of 1532 points.

Notably, Morocco’s futsal team stands as the leading African and Arab country in this type of football, trailing behind world football powerhouses such as Brazil, Spain, Portugal, and others.

The futsal Atlas Lions have represented Morocco in various international futsal competitions, achieving notable success, under the leadership of Dguig with victories in 2 Africa Futsal Cup of Nations editions, in 2016 after defeating Egypt 3-2 in the final and 2020.

Their journey in the continental championship saw them secure their first runner-up position back in 2000, followed by another notable achievement in 2008, where they finished in third place.

The Moroccan futsal team also clinched victory in 3 Arab Futsal Cups, triumphing in the editions of 2021, 2022, and 2023, with a standout 7-1 win over Kuwait. Their first runner-up position in the Arab Futsal Championship dates back to 1998.

They additionally won the Futsal Confederations Cup in 2022, sealing the victory with a 4-3 win over Iran.

In terms of the FIFA World Cup, Morocco’s futsal team made its debut at the FIFA Futsal World Cup in 2012 in Thailand but didn’t advance from the group stage.

In 2021, Morocco’s futsal team achieved the Quarter-finalist title in the FIFA World Cup run in Lithuania.

This year, they have secured qualification for the World Cup, set to be run in Uzbekistan from September 14th to October 6th.

These achievements demonstrate the unity of the national team, the stability in management, and the players’ determination, both physically and technically. Continuous support from the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, has also been pivotal in their journey.

The presence of the Mohammed VI Football Center, geared towards excellence and the development of high-level football practice, reflects His Majesty the King’s ongoing support for sports, particularly football. This environment has motivated the futsal football team to shine and succeed.
