Morocco opens doors to Egyptian potatoes to meet domestic needs

The Moroccan market is set to open up for Egyptian potatoes, as announced on Thursday by Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Elsayed Al-Qasir.

This strategy is part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to expand the reach of Egyptian agricultural products into new international markets, thereby fortifying the national economy and enhancing cash reserves, as stated in the official announcement released by the Egypt State Information Service (SIS)

The announcement followed a report by Saad Moussa, supervisor of the Egyptian Agricultural Quarantine, stating that Morocco’s National Health Safety Office for Food Products (ONSSA) has officially approved the import of Egyptian potato crops.

This development is particularly significant considering Morocco’s recent surge in potato seed imports, which have reached a five-year high, according to Potato Pro media as of June 2023.

Seed imports reflect Morocco’s ongoing commitment to promoting its potato production sector and meeting growing market demands amidst hurdles such as the severe drought in the summer of 2022, adversely impacting productivity and leading to near-zero potato exports in 2023.

Speaking of Egypt, the country experienced a notable surge in agricultural exports during the first quarter of 2024.

It exported more than 2.2 million tons of agricultural products, according to data from the Agriculture Ministry, amounting to approximately $1.5 billion in value. This marked a considerable increase of $300 million compared to the same period last year.

These positive trends in exports have persisted despite disruptions in supply chains and the Egyptian government’s imposition of restrictions on the export of specific products to support the domestic market, says Ahram Online, a local news outlet.
