The head of the Algerian Construction Movement, Abdelkader Bengrina, called on the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, to ban the African Lion 2024 military exercise, which Morocco organizes in conjunction with the United States.

“These maneuvers, which are scheduled to take place from May 20 to 31, 2024, constitute illegitimate aggression against the territories of Western Sahara,” grumbled Bengrina, claiming that “the operations do not align with the principle of self-determination, which is overseen by the UN.”

The Leader of the Algerian political party called on the countries participating in the 2024 edition of the African Lion to “refrain from participating,” arguing that these maneuvers “violate the sovereignty of territories and water claimed by the people from the south.”

Moroccan authorities are planning to conduct the 2024 African Lion military exercises this year in multiple locations across the Kingdom. This includes Agadir, Tan Tan, Mahbes, Kenitra, Ben Guerir, and Tifnit.

Morocco and the United States are set to strengthen military cooperation through this large-scale exercise. It is expected to foster exchanges between participating countries’ armed forces, solidifying regional peace, security, and stability.

The annual African Lion military exercise, co-organized by both countries since 2008, exemplifies international collaboration in security matters. This event attracts over 10,000 participants from Arab and African nations, and roughly 20 countries participate as observers.
