Frustration rose among driving license exam candidates this week, after most failed across Morocco due to the National Agency for Road Safety’s (NARSA) new and updated question bank.
This discontent has been particularly evident on social media platforms, where candidates have expressed dissatisfaction with the unusually high fail rates.
According to Hespress professional sources, the failure rate in the driving license exam reached 100% in some Moroccan cities, such as Berrechid, El Khemisset, El Jadida, Essaouira, Ouarzazate, and Khouribga.
The number of successful candidates in other cities did not exceed one or two individuals.
President of the National Union of Associations and Owners of Driving Schools, Traffic Law, and Road Safety in Morocco, Dahan Bouberd, confirmed the 99% national failure rate to Hespress.
“Professionals in the sector were among the first to demand the renewal and updating of the exam question bank, as the previously approved questions became available to everyone on the internet and social media platforms,” said Bouberd.
Additionally, driving school owners have joined the popular chorus of criticism, highlighting concerns about the nature of the questions asked to candidates.
Dahan added, in a statement to Hespress that “during discussions with the National Agency for Road Safety, we agreed to increase the number of exam questions from 600 to 1000 but gradually.”
“Additionally, there was an agreement to eliminate questions where candidates either failed or passed frequently and replace them with new questions. However, we were surprised by this unexpected failure rate, which implies negative connotations around driving schools in Morocco.”
In this regard, the president noted, “Ever since they introduced the new question bank, people started to neglect Driving schools,” as students blame the institutions.
“Some school owners even faced problems with candidates who demanded refunds after seeing the exam questions, which could further discourage people from applying for driving licenses,” and going through driving schools.
The President of the Union emphasized that “The implementation of these exam questions should have been smoother as part of a transitional phase.”
He highlighted that “driving schools focus primarily on road rules and traffic signaling, but some of the questions asked in the exam are unrelated to these topics and pertain to road safety, which is not part of the driving school curriculum.”
However, a Hespress AR source from NARSA confirmed that “the success rate in the driving license exam has shown improvement today compared to the rate recorded yesterday, and we have noted satisfaction in this regard among candidates.”
They added that while the questions are new, they still align with the five main axes outlined in the traffic code.
Furthermore, the source assured that “Some of the images of questions circulating on social media are fake.”
They also highlighted the importance of providing training sessions for driving schools to adapt to this new system effectively and efficiently.
