Three Polisario separatists were killed on Tuesday evening in a drone strike carried out by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR) near the buffer zone in Mahbes, according to a well-informed source who spoke to Hespress on condition of anonymity.
The source identified the victims as Sid Ahmed Mohamed Mahmoud El Bat, Mahfoud Fadli Sid Ibrahim, and Bedbdeh Hamida.
The source also said that “attempts by Polisario elements to approach the security belt and Moroccan army positions have not stopped since the Polisario announced its renunciation of the ceasefire agreement; the annual reports of the UN Secretary-General in this regard testify to this.”
The source added that “these attempts are mostly concentrated in the Mahbes sector near Tindouf, given the ease of withdrawing from danger zones towards Algerian territory.”
The source said that “Moroccan drones have deprived the Polisario of the ease of movement east of the security belt and prevented it from gathering its forces in these areas to carry out any surprise attack.”
The source explained that “in the past, Polisario members had enough time to prepare their attacks without fear of any reaction, but now barely one or two cars can sneak in very difficult circumstances to try to bomb Moroccan Armed Forces positions; they also have to withdraw very quickly, which makes their attacks lose their focus and impact.”
The source concluded that “Morocco remains committed to the ceasefire agreement, while reserving the right to respond to any provocations, as all its operations in this regard are part of responding to Polisario threats to its national security.”
It is worth noting that Morocco has repeatedly reiterated its commitment to the ceasefire, while stressing that it will deal firmly and rigorously with any threat to its security and stability.
Since the clearing of the Guerguerat crossing on November 13, 2020, Rabat has been dealing very strictly with all separatist attempts to approach the positions and centers of the Royal Armed Forces in the Sahara.
The international community has called for both sides to exercise restraint and return to the negotiating table.
The UN Security Council has urged the parties to resume direct talks without preconditions and to work towards a mutually acceptable solution to the long-standing conflict.
