The Tahadi for Equality and Citizenship Association said it has received complaints from over 50 underage girls following the leak of hundreds of explicit videos and photos of women and underage girls, according to Al-Ahdath Al Maghribia.
The rights group has called for urgent action to protect women and girls from digital violence after the leak of hundreds of private videos and photos online.
The group’s president, Bouchra Abdou, said that society is quick to forgive men for such indiscretions, but not women.
The president pointed out that a male singer who had an intimate photo of him leaked on social media had not faced the same level of backlash.
The association stressed the need for all institutions to work together to protect children from digital dangers.
The NGO called on the Ministry of National Education to introduce a curriculum that teaches students how to deal with digital violence.
Tahadi also urged the media to play a responsible role by directing victims of these crimes to file complaints with the authorities.
The association called on social media users not to share the videos and photos, as this could further traumatize the victims.
The association’s statement came as Morocco grapples with a growing problem of digital violence.
In February 2024, a large number of private videos and photos, primarily involving women and girls, were leaked online, allegedly from the Snapchat app.
Hassan Kharjouj, an expert in digital marketing and information development, previously informed Hespress that there had been no breach of the Snapchat application itself.
Kharjouj explained that the widely circulated link contained 10 to 15 digital files labeled “Tele Box,” purportedly featuring girls engaging in behavior they had willingly recorded.
“Due to content regulations on social media platforms, they resorted to uploading photos captured via Snapchat’s camera to an alternative site for distribution,” stated the expert.
Kharjouj emphasized the lack of validity to claims regarding hacking and database breaches, as his personal investigation found that approximately twenty girls had willingly shared their photos.
“If there had been a breach, it would have impacted over a million Snapchat users in Morocco; however, to his knowledge, no such incident occurred,” further added the expert.
Last year, the General Directorate of National Security said it had dealt with more than 5,000 cases of digital violence.
The Public Prosecution Office handled 162 cases, while the Tahadi for Equality and Citizenship Association received 553 complaints.
