This evening, the Moroccan and South African football teams will face off for qualification to the 2023 AFCON quarter finals.
The two teams have previously met 10 times in various competitions, whether official or friendly, and neither team beat the other, given that the results sometimes favored Morocco and sometimes favored South Africa.
The first confrontation between the Lions and Bafana Bafana dates back to the year 1998 in the quarter-finals of the African Cup, in which Morocco was defeated by two goals to one. It also suffered a second defeat in the 2002 edition, with a score of three goals to one, in the group stage.
Two years later, the two sides played to a scoreless draw in a friendly tournament played in Iran, but the national team won on penalties.
The draw continued in four consecutive matches, as the two sides faced off in 2004 in Cannes, Tunisia, and the match ended in a positive draw with a goal for the same, then another confrontation ended with two goals for the same in the same tournament in 2013, and another ended in a friendly match in the same year with a goal in each net.
Six years later, specifically in 2019, the Lions succeeded in winning with a clean goal in the African Championship hosted by Egypt, and then they came back to win by two goals to one over the same opponent in the ongoing African Cup qualifiers.
The return match in the same qualifiers was played in June of last year, and the result was two goals to one for South Africa, and it was only a formality after the two teams had previously qualified for this tournament.
The Moroccan national team hopes to overcome the obstacle of South Africa this evening and reach the quarter-finals, in the match hosted by the Laurent Poco Stadium in the city of San Pedro, starting at nine o’clock at night Moroccan time.
