The Kingdom’s human rights progress over the last two decades was at the heart of talks held, Monday in Rabat, between Morocco’s House of Councilors Speaker, Enaam Mayara, and Chair of the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights (UNWG BHR), Damilola Olawuyi.
Myara underlined, on this occasion, that Morocco’s human rights commitment “represents a voluntary choice reinforced by the involvement of all society, which allowed the Kingdom to chair the UN Human Rights Council”, noting that this is a recognition of the various efforts made by Morocco, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, as well as the policies implemented to consolidate the rule of law, the House of Councilors said in a press release.
He also highlighted the Upper House’s role in promoting human rights, underlining the importance of cooperation between the House of Councilors and the National Human Rights Council in implementing joint programs and agreements in this area.
For his part, the chair of the United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights (UNWG BHR) welcomed Morocco’s openness and its continued interaction with the UN human rights organization, pointing out that his current visit to Morocco aims to further promote the general guidelines of the UNWG BHR.
Olawuyi also reviewed the role of the UN group, particularly with regard to promoting, disseminating and implementing the UN general guidelines on business and human rights.
The UN official highlighted the role of parliaments in promoting human rights culture, calling on parliaments to take advantage of their legislative role to develop new laws and adapt existing laws in order to fill in the gaps.
