The Moroccan Agency of Waters and Forests (ANEP) has debunked rumors surrounding Atlas Lion attacks in the Atlas region.
Dismissing the existence of the animal as “far-fetched,” ANEP, in a press release, revealed its collaborative efforts with local authorities. The agency conducted multiple search campaigns to unravel the truth behind the alleged presence of a lion in the Sebt Ait Rahou commune of Khenifra and nearby villages.
ANEP said traces in the area pointed to the presence of dogs or potentially wolves, eliminating the possibility of lions.
The investigation involved the dissection of a sheep’s corpse, suspected to be a lion’s meal in Oulmes. Contrary to expectations, experts determined that the traces did not align with those of a lion; instead, they resembled bites from dogs.
ANEP concluded that the alleged existence of a lion is far-fetched and not a plausible hypothesis.
Despite dispelling the lion myth, ANEP remains vigilant and urges the public to promptly notify the agency of any lion sightings or additional information on the matter.
