National coach Walid Regragui revealed the Moroccan national team’s program for the final preparations for the African Cup of Nations finals (CAN), noting that the group will enter a closed camp starting next January 1, which will include a private preparatory match against Gambia.
Regragui said, during the press conference announcing the final list of players who will participate in the upcoming tournament, that the national team will travel to Côte d’Ivoire a week before the start of the competition.
Walid Regragui spoke about the growing pressure that accompanies successive tournaments, as the Moroccan national team eyes the coveted Continental Cup.
“The pressure is growing, and that we are currently fourth in the world does not necessarily mean that we are the favored team that can win the cup… The promise I can give you is that we will travel as one group, as we did in Qatar… and we will offer our utmost best to make Moroccans happy.”
The Atlas lions’ last CAN feat dates back to 1976, but after the latest World Cup edition, hopes for Morocco are at an all time high.
“We have been preparing for this cup for a year. The mental aspect is important, but the field will be decisive,” said Regragui.
“We will not look for excuses, but we will not burden ourselves with more pressure and drain our energy…”
“It is true that just as we made history in the Qatar World Cup, we must also make it in the African Cup, and as long as the intention is still there, it will be good.”
Regragui stressed that ambition and commitment exist are high among the Moroccan national team, saying: “We will give the maximum that we can offer. We must be confident to get rid of the CAN curse.”
