After recognizing Malhoun art as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Morocco is still at the forefront of African countries regarding elements inscribed on the UNESCO list.

Following the approval of the request for the inscription of Malhoun on the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO, the kingdom has introduced 13 elements of its heritage into this list, maintaining itself at the head of African countries, said the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication in a press release.

Mali and Algeria come second with eight items for each country, followed by Malawi (6 items), Zambia, Nigeria, Egypt (5 items for each country), Ethiopia (4 items) and Côte d’Ivoire and Mauritania (3 elements for each country), the ministry said.

The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, whose 18th session was held on Wednesday in Botswana, approved Morocco’s request to include Malhoun in the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
