The National Office for Hydrocarbons and Mining (ONHYM) announced that it is currently estimating, together with the Swiss company HYNAT, the promising potential of hydrogen gas in targeted areas in Morocco.
The National office revealed in a statement to Hespress that “both companies have started preparing for conducting surface and seismic surveys in 2D and 3D.”
“Natural hydrogen gas investigation is ongoing in all significant areas, and with the positive initial results received from other private companies, they have received several partnership offers that are currently being studied,” continues the office.
ONHYM has been employing its own resources to develop information across other promising areas, where the presence of natural hydrogen gas flow was identified and verified, such as in the southern regions, the Benslimane Basin- Khemisset, and the eastern region
Together with the Swiss company, several field missions have been carried out, including on-site measurements of gas leaks, especially hydrogen gas, as well as geophysical coverage on the ground.
The results once again confirmed the presence of natural hydrogen gas, as well as the chemical and isotopic analyses of noble gases (helium, neon, and xenon), indicating that the flow originates from the lower part of the Earth’s crust.
ONHYM also shed light on their work in 2018, in which they modeled all available geoscientific data (geochemical, geophysical, geological data, etc.) to investigate Morocco’s geological potential of natural hydrogen formation in the depths of the Earth.
The preliminary results were very promising and encouraged further detailed research and scrutiny.
“Between 2019 and 2020, they conducted expertise in the search for natural hydrogen in the Kingdom through an external handling service. In the first phase of this process, they collected and compiled existing scientific geological data, and identified targets. In the second phase, the results of the tests showed the presence of natural hydrogen flow and natural H2 indicators in some areas,” said the same source to Hespress AR.
As to the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, the source underscored that “it is progressing steadily thanks to the close cooperation between ONHYM and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPC Ltd), which have been working in harmony since the project was initiated.”
ONHYM said that regular committee meetings are being organized to discuss specific issues with the participation of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the countries concerned, to further explore the technical aspects of the project.
Regarding the recent meeting in Marrakech, ONHYM stated that a meeting of the project’s technical committee was held, in which the progress of field studies and studies related to environmental and social impact were discussed.
“Meetings of the technical committee for the research and study requirements of the Agreement between Governments were also organized, which was prepared in collaboration with ECOWAS and NNPC Ltd during previous meetings in May and August 2023,” concluded the same source, in a statement to Hespress.
