Morocco’s energy success story, with its environmental and economic dimensions and its quest for sustainable solutions to consolidate the Kingdom’s energy independence and make the most of its natural resources, was at the heart of an event organized by the Solar Impulse Foundation and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) under the theme “Innovation and Climate”.
During the meeting, which attracted students, researchers, and leaders in the field of energy economics, the General Director of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), Abderrahim El Hafidi, highlighted the figures for Morocco’s advances in investment in renewable energies, which accelerated as part of a national decision taken in the wake of the 2008 energy crisis.
El Hafidi detailed the components of the Moroccan electricity model, which is in harmony with the specific characteristics of a country with insufficient fossil energy sources but committed to winning the wager of energy independence.
The strategic goal is centered on optimum investment in wind and solar resources, to achieve a 52% share of the electricity mix for renewable energies by 2030, the official said, noting that the interim result for 2023 shows a 133% increase in renewable energy production.
For his part, Tarik Hamane, Deputy Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), reviewed the process of expanding the agency’s scope of activity to include solar and wind energy programs, stressing that the Moroccan approach takes into account both the environmental dimension of energy production and its economic spin-offs.
Morocco, he added, has adopted a forward-looking position in the green hydrogen revolution, drawing on its enormous solar and wind resources and exploiting its proximity to Europe as a promising market for its renewable energy products. Many international players have expressed interest in investing in this sector in Morocco, Hamane stated.
