The United Nations (UN) has officially initiated an investigation into potential war crimes that transpired during the recent escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry said that there is  “clear evidence” of serious violations by all parties involved, and fervently called for adherence to international human rights law.

The commission, a body designated to probe international law violations in the Palestinian Territories, released a statement confirming its comprehensive efforts in gathering and safeguarding evidence of war crimes from both sides since October 7, 2023.

The commission voiced “grave concern” about Israel’s response, citing the attack on Gaza and the complete blockade of the region as constituting “collective punishment.”

“The committee is deeply concerned about Israel’s announcement of a complete blockade on Gaza, including the cessation of water, food, electricity, and fuel, which will undoubtedly result in significant civilian casualties and amounts to collective punishment,” said the UN commission in a statement.

The commission pledged to ensure “legal accountability” for all individuals responsible for international law violations. It asserted its intention to identify anyone connected to war crimes on either side, including those in command positions, and share pertinent information with judicial authorities, including the International Criminal Court.

The UN body called upon all parties involved to abstain from further violence and emphasized the need for “the unconditional and secure release of all individuals who have been taken hostage by Palestinian armed groups.”

The UN commission underscored that the resolution of the conflict necessitates addressing its “root causes,” such as the illegal occupation of Palestinian territory and recognizing the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.

In the course of the escalation, the militant group Hamas launched a substantial attack on Israel, discharging thousands of rockets and briefly seizing Israeli settlements bordering Gaza.

According to Israeli authorities, the attack and subsequent clashes resulted in the loss of at least 900 Israeli lives, including 123 members of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

In response, Israel carried out an extensive aerial offensive against Gaza. As of Monday, the Ministry of Health in the enclave reported at least 510 Palestinian casualties and 2,751 injuries due to Israeli air raids.

It vigorously denounced the assault on Israel by the militant group Hamas, asserting that the indiscriminate killing of unarmed civilians and hostage-taking were intolerable and amounted to acts classified as “war crimes.”
