Fifteen people across Morocco have lodged a complaint before the Casablanca public prosecutor, after experiencing severe eye pain, and for some, loss of eyesight, after receiving an injection at the August 20 Hospital in Casablanca.
The story, which made headlines on Wednesday, prompted the hospital’s administration to issue a statement, reacting to the situation.
“The matter concerns 16 patients suffering from retinal diseases with visual impairment who are being treated in the hospital’s ophthalmology department,” said the statement, issued Wednesday night, adding, “They received an intravitreal injection, known as (IVT), on September 19, in accordance with the standards followed in such cases for these treatments.”
Symptoms of redness, eye pain and decreased vision appeared the next day in only two of these patients,” explained the hospital, but adding that “the medical team summoned all patients who received the injection on September 19, admitted them to the hospital, placed them under medical observation, and given necessary treatments” to avoid worsening side affects.
The hospital confirmed that the results of medical monitoring showed that all patients showed signs of noticeable improvement after receiving treatment, as five of them left the hospital after completing treatment, while others are still in the hospital to receive further treatment under medical observation supervised by specialized doctors, and will leave the hospital after completing treatment in the coming days.
Following patients’ complaints, the hospital stressed that this is but an “isolated incident,” saying that “ophthalmologists at the hospital have, for years, resorted to using intraocular injections to treat retinal diseases, which may cause temporary visual impairment.”
“These injections constitute a qualitative leap in the treatment of retinal diseases, and are used in all ophthalmology centers around the world in order to slow the deterioration of vision in patients,” said the hospital, concluding that it has opened a medical and administrative investigation to find out the circumstances of this incident.
