The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has committed a substantial $4.5 billion investment towards expediting the advancement of clean energy initiatives in Africa.
This contribution comes from a consortium of UAE entities, including Masdar, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, Etihad Credit Insurance, and AMEA Power, a Dubai-based renewable energy company.
AMEA Power is set to finance five gigawatts of renewable energy capacity with a total mobilization of $5 billion, consisting of $1 billion in equity investments and $4 billion in project finance.
The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development will contribute $1 billion to address essential infrastructure needs, while Etihad Credit Insurance will offer $500 million in credit insurance to mitigate risks and attract private capital.
Additionally, Africa50, an investment platform established by African governments and the Africa Development Bank, has joined forces with this initiative.
Africa50, founded to address the continent’s infrastructure challenges, will play a crucial role in identifying initial projects and facilitating collaboration with responsible organizations.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the President-designate of Cop28, highlighted the UAE’s commitment to promoting clean energy in emerging and developing nations through innovative blended finance. The initiative’s key focus is to invest in African countries with well-defined transition strategies, robust regulatory frameworks, and comprehensive plans for grid infrastructure development.
