Morocco’s Customs authorities at the Bab Sebta crossing point foiled on Friday an attempt to smuggle large quantities of ecstasy’ and poufa crack into Morocco.
20.056 of ecstasy tablets and more than 1.300 grams of‘Poufa were seized carefully hidden inside a Citroën car driven by a Moroccan citizen accompanied by his Spanish wife.
The same source added that the two suspects were arrested immediately upon their arrival in Morocco and were placed under investigation by the competent public prosecutor’s office.
Samples from the seized drug were handed over to the National Laboratory of Forensic Police for the technical analysis required to determine all the chemical components involved in their production as well as the level and the extent of their impact on public health.
This operation is part of DGS’s continuous efforts to combat international drug trafficking and transnational crime, as mentioned in the same statement.
Moroccan social media users launched, in July, an online campaign to express their firm opposition against the spread of Poufa among young people and shed light on its negative impacts on their health.
The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the ongoing alarming spread of Poufa among youth, calling authorities to take necessary actions to stop it.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) highlighted the rising teen cocaine consumption in the kingdom in a report that was published earlier this year.
In Morocco, the usage of cocaine hydrochloride among 15 to 17-year-olds grew over the previous year, going from 0.4% in 2013 to 0.7% in 2017, while the use of “crack” cocaine remained stable at 0.4%.
