DGSN: 20 dead and over 2,000 injured in one week on Moroccan roads

Twenty people were killed and 2,210 injured, 87 of them seriously, in 1,608 traffic accidents in urban areas in the week from August 14 to 20, according to the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN).

In a press release, the DGSN explains the main causes of these fatal road accidents. According to the police, these accidents were mainly due to drivers being careless, failing to give way, failing to control vehicles, failing to keep a safe distance, pedestrians being careless, speeding, changing direction without using a signal, failing to stop, driving in the left-hand lane, improper overtaking, unauthorized changes of direction, driving in the wrong direction, failing to obey red lights and driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to the same source, the control and repression of traffic offences led to the recording of no less than 39,483 contraventions and 5,752 procès-verbaux submitted to the public prosecutor’s office last week, underlining that 33,731 transactional fines were collected.

The sums collected for these fines totaled 7,406,675 dirhams, according to the press release, which also reported that 4,926 vehicles had been impounded, 1,398 documents seized and 214 vehicles taken off the road.
