Moroccan Coalition raises concerns over unemployed Ph.D. holders

The Moroccan Coalition for Human Rights has issued an open letter to the Head of Government, highlighting the rising concerns of the protesting unemployed Ph.D. holders associated with the Coordinating Committee of Unemployed Ph.D. Holders.

In the letter, of which Hespress English has received a copy, the coalition urged the Prime Minister to intervene promptly. The organization recommended a course of action involving formal communication with various governmental and non-governmental entities.

The coalition highlighted that the right to work is a fundamental entitlement guaranteed to all citizens. This principle is established in international agreements, including the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, and also in the Moroccan Constitution’s Article 31 of the second chapter, which deals with essential freedoms and rights.

The coalition expressed significant concern over the apparent disregard of this crucial right, sounding the alarm that this neglect might directly impact the hunger strikers’ right to life, physical safety, and personal security.

This concern is increased by a significant number of hunger strikers facing an excessive use of force during peaceful protests in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, resulting in injuries among some of them.

The letter underscored the necessity of ensuring the right to work for this segment of society and fostering an environment that upholds this fundamental right.

For the past 17 days, the unemployed Ph.D. holders have been on an open-ended hunger strike to protest the neglect of their demands regarding employment conditions that uphold their human dignity.

Several of them  have fainted due to the hunger strike, resulting in their transfer to hospitals for treatment..
