An online campaign promoting tree planting has prompted the Casablanca City Council to reconsider using palm trees in some streets, due to numerous complaints from environmental civic groups.
Environmental activists in Casablanca have sent multiple letters to the city’s administrative subdivisions, advocating for tree planting in streets and neighborhoods instead of palm trees.
Casablanca, like other cities, has seen widespread debate over its tree planting practices, with civil society organizations urging the abandonment of palm trees in streets to improve the city’s aesthetics and combat air pollution in the economic hub of the country.
Social media activists have also organized protests to urge local authorities to protect green spaces and encourage tree planting in streets as an alternative to palm trees.
