The 2023 Marhaba Operation generated significant financial revenues for Spanish ports that suffered from economic repercussions of COVID-19, refreshing the movement of funds within the country.
The news agency “Europe Press” indicated that the port of Tarifa and the port of Algeciras witnessed a remarkable movement in mid-July, highlighting that the Moroccan community residing abroad has doubled inflow to these two ports in the past two weeks.
It confirmed that more than 6,700 vehicles passed through Tarifa and Green Island in one day at the end of last week, while the number of passengers during the same day reached more than 29,000 passengers. It is expected that the numbers will increase at the end of this month and early next month.
Due to the revitalization of the southern ports in the summer, the exhausted local economy in Algeciras recovered after a complete stagnation resulting from the suspension of the sea lines linking the Kingdom of Morocco and Spain.
Many firm measures were taken by both Rabat and Madrid to launch the maritime linkage process and resume passenger movement. Movement between the two countries was suspended for two years due to COVID-19 and the diplomatic crisis that cast a shadow over economic cooperation.
The aforementioned news agency considered that the Iberian Shipping Company used in the ports had strengthened its workforce in the past two months, especially in the ports of Algeciras, Ceuta and Tarifa. This company has incorporated more than 156 workers to organise the transit of passengers.
“Operation Marhaba constituted an appropriate economic opportunity to provide job opportunities for young people in the summer,” said Roni Moriana, General Manager of FRS Iberia, noting that “the company increased its technical and administrative staff during this seasonal period.”
The same official explained that “an important part of the additional crew will be part of the permanent work team of the shipping company in the future,” stressing “the provision of all high-quality services for travellers to make the Marhaba operation, which extends until next September, a success.”
Under the instructions of King Mohammed VI, the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity launched the 2023 version of the “Marhaba” operation to receive Moroccans living abroad, extending from the 5th of June to the 15th of September.
