Google is experimenting with an AI tool that can create news articles

The Wall Street Journal, News Corp, The New York Times, and The Washington Post are among the news organizations that have been pitched the idea of an AI tool to assist them in creating news articles by Google, according to US media sites. This Google product is supposed to utilize artificial intelligence technology to produce news stories.

According to several insiders who spoke to The New York Times under the condition of anonymity in order to discuss the product, said that it is internally known by the working name “Genesis”, and can take in information, such as specifics of current events, for example, and produce news material.

One of the people with knowledge of the product claimed that Google thought it could act as a sort of personal assistant for journalists, automating some tasks to free up time for others, and that the company saw it as responsible technology that could help steer the publishing sector away from the pitfalls of generative A.I.

The New York Times sources called the Google pitch unsettling. It seemed to take for granted the work that went into crafting factual and artistic news pieces, according to two people.

Jenn Crider, a Google spokeswoman, said in a statement that “in partnership with news publishers, especially smaller publishers, we’re in the earliest stages of exploring ideas to potentially provide A.I.-enabled tools to help their journalists with their work,” as read on The New York Post.

The release of Google’s new tool is certain to cause concern among journalists who have been producing their own content for years.

Even though some news organizations, including The Associated Press, have long employed AI to generate stories about topics like corporate earnings reports, they still make up a very small portion of the service’s articles as compared to those written by journalists, the same outlet said.

Many prominent A.I. businesses, like Google, have come under fire from publishers and other content creators for exploiting decades’ worth of their articles and postings as training data for their systems without paying the authors.

NBC News and The Times are two news organizations that have spoken out against artificial intelligence programs stealing their data without their consent.
