51 people are still missing from an inflatable boat that left the southern coast of Morocco on June 22.

After eight days adrift at sea, the boat returned to the coast on Friday, with only four survivors on board.

Quoted by the Spanish news agency, the president of Caminando Fronteras Helena Maleno said the boat had left the Moroccan southern town of Tan Tan with 55 people on board, including 11 women and 3 children from various countries.

The migrants are from Senegal, Gambia, Ethiopia, Sudan and Sri Lanka, the official told reporters. The boat was later found between Tan Tan and Tarfaya.

The same source indicates that on Sunday, five other boats left the Moroccan coast between Tan Tan and Agadir for the Canary Islands, with a total of 266 people on board, still missing in Atlantic waters.

The boat that returned to the coast on Friday, pushed by sea currents, alerted Spanish rescue services, who received a position from a telephone on board on June 23, Maleno told EFE.

Rescue services later reported to Caminando Fronteras that they had communicated the position to Moroccan authorities, who replied that the boat was untraceable.

Two of the survivors, with whom Caminando Fronteras has been in contact, have been admitted to hospital in Laâyoune. They are Sudanese and Ivorian respectively, and suffer from dehydration and burns.
