Moroccans are calling online for the boycott of an upcoming show by French rapper Kaaris, set to take place on June 24 at a Tangier nightclub.
Following the show’s announcement on social media, internet users dug up old Kaaris lyrics, which were deemed offensive to Moroccan women, and called for the show’s cancellation.
“Unfortunately, the event is coming up soon, thus we need a boycott campaign as with Booba,” said a tweet in regards to the situation.
The lyrics in question were from the rapper’s remix of Rick Ross’ Mafia Music, written and recorded in 2010, in which he refers to Moroccan women in degrading terms.
The organizers did not respond to a Hespress English request for comment.
This follows a recent controversy surrounding Kaaris’ nemesis, French rapper Booba, who was supposed to perform in Casablanca’s Mohammed V stadium on June 21, but was eventually dropped due to a fierce campaign calling for the show’s cancellation.
“Officials that invite this kind of person to Morocco should face legal repercussions. Boycott those who mistreat or disparage our women or our kingdom.” Said another tweet.
This would be the second time a Kaaris show stirs debate online, after another Tangier nightclub canceled a show featuring the French rapper in 2019 for the same reasons.
Kaaris took to Instagram at the time to defend himself, in a lengthy, now-deleted post, the rapper wrote “Moroccan men are my brothers and my dads. Moroccan women are my sisters and my moms.”
“Please get in touch with those who can finally outlaw these rots. The fact that such people get invited to perform in our country is astounding.” Internet users took to the internet to plead for the cancellation of the show.
