Global oceans experienced the warmest May on record since the 19th century, the European Union’s climate monitoring unit revealed on Wednesday.

According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), sea temperatures at a depth of approximately 10 meters were a quarter of a degree Celsius higher than the average of ice-free oceans during May from 1991 to 2020.

Samantha Burgess, the deputy director of C3S, highlighted that long-term trends have led to a 0.6-degree Celsius increase in the surface waters of the ocean over the past 40 years. She also noted that April had already set a new heat record.

Ocean temperatures could continue to rise in the coming months due to the emergence of the El Niño signal in the equatorial Pacific. El Niño refers to a natural shift in ocean winds that intensifies global warming.
