Humans crossed seven of nine 'safe limits' for survival on Earth, study finds
Saturday 3 June 2023 - 00:20

The seventh safe limit for human life on Earth has been exceeded, according to research published in the Nature Journal on May 31, 2023.

Seven of the safety thresholds for human existence on Earth have been exceeded. Climate change, biodiversity, land-system change, and biogeochemical flows are examples of boundaries that have been crossed which resulted in a global imbalance.

The research revealed that after humans crossed the seventh of the nine human life boundaries, they began to endanger the future of civilization.

“Human well-being and the stability and resilience of the Earth system are inextricably linked” according to the research.

However, these components’ interdependencies are typically ignored and frequently addressed separately.

Climate change, biosphere integrity, land-system change, freshwater consumption, biogeochemical flows, ocean acidification, atmospheric aerosol pollution, stratospheric ozone depletion, are all subject to these constraints.

The study looks at each element and shows how the boundaries are out of balance, endangering the survival of humans on Earth.

The Earth Commission, an impartial international scientific assessment endeavor hosted by Future Earth, had 40 researchers lead the research.

The idea of planetary limits, which people should not cross if they want the Earth to continue to host humans, was first proposed by a group of international experts in 2009.

Humans interfered with these boundaries, which has resulted in a reduction in natural areas, by changing water flows, releasing excessive amounts of nutrients into streams due to the use of fertilizer, and misusing natural resources.

The safe and just climate limit, which is set at 1 degree Celsius over pre-industrial temperatures, has already been crossed.

Morocco experienced the greatest temperatures since 1981 in 2022, with +1.63°C hotter than average between 1981 and 2010.

The Moroccan Kingdom experienced a 32% decrease in precipitation over the past four years, it has been the driest four years in a row since the 1960s.

The five years from 2023 to 2027 will be the warmest on record, according to the UN’s World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

“The rising temperatures are melting away substantial Greenland ice sheets and increasing deforestation in the Amazon forest, all likely to lift oceans by meters and release billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide and methane” stated the report.

Through this work, the scientist also identified and measured safe Earth system boundaries for maintaining the global commons that govern the condition of the planet, safeguard other species, lessen serious harm to people, and promote inclusive human progress.

The experts urged the establishment of goals to prevent serious damage and ensure that everyone has access to resources, as well as changes to help people reach those goals, according to the report.

“Nations, cities, businesses, and other key actors need to set and achieve science-based targets for reducing their environmental impacts.”
