After visiting Morocco in the spring of 2022 and seeing its visual culture and distinct heritage, American artist Nicolas Coleman captured the kingdom’s beauty through his paintings.
“Both the country’s ancient and recent past are defined by this cultural exchange and melange among Arab, European, and sub-Saharan African peoples. The result is one of the most beautiful and complex places on earth,” said the artist in an interview with “It’s Nice That”, a creative platform serving the global creative community.
Coleman remembers being stunned by the country’s beauty and artistry. He explains that there is a remarkable dedication to improving almost every physical location, from palaces to modest rural dwellings.
The artist also took pleasure in conversing with locals and learning about their personal histories. However, Coleman, stated that he made an effort to be conscious of how the nation’s reliance on tourism influenced many of the conversations he had.
“I felt an intense desire to be a part of the culture while being aware that I was experiencing it as both an outsider and a customer,” he explained.
With this in mind, Coleman decided to produce a body of work that incorporated both the “discomfort” of tourism and the “beauty” of Morocco.
His paintings are called “A Stranger In Morocco”, showing a man in different settings, with mosaic and textile, which was the artist’s attempt to “elevate the physical spaces to an equal level as the subjects”.
“Ultimately, I hope that people perceive and in some way relate to the feeling I was trying to capture of being a visitor or stranger in a new place,” concluded the artist.
