At least 16 people were killed and several others injured in a gun battle between two rival groups in Pakistan’s northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred late Monday in Kohat district over the demarcation of a coal mine disputed by the two groups, district police said.
The incident took place because of a long-standing dispute between the two tribal groups, same source added, noting that several sessions of Jirga, a local tribal court, had been held to reconcile the rival tribes.
However, members of both groups engaged in a gun battle on Monday while working in the coal mine, resulting in 16 deaths and four injuries.
Law enforcement agencies have taken control of the disputed coal mine, police said, adding that some of the individuals involved in the confrontation have fled and that a search operation is underway to nab them.
