NASA’s Asteroid Watch has revealed a list of space objects that will make “close approaches” to Earth, including an asteroid twice as big as the Statue of Liberty.
An asteroid of that size would cause serious damage if it were to collide with the Earth, which is why NASA considers any object larger than 150 meters potentially hazardous.
A total of five asteroids are expected to closely approach the Earth in May, with the largest, dubbed 2023 GY2, expected to pass Earth on May 22 at a distance of under 7 million kilometers away.
The first of these close approaches is expected on Tuesday, with a 17-meter diameter asteroid passing the Earth at a distance of under 1,5 million kilometers.
