Morocco ranked 144 out of 180 countries in the global Press Freedom Index, a decline from its position as the 135th country in the previous year.

The World Press Freedom Index 2023, which was released by Reporters Without Borders, rates countries based on their scores for five factors: political, economic, legal, social, and security indicators. These factors all relate to freedom of speech.

Morocco’s political indicator fell from 104 in 2022 to 151 in 2023, while the country’s economic indicator increased from 164 to 157. The legislative indicator went from 129 to 124 up five rates. Morocco improved socially, moving up from 129 to 124, while security declined, going from 139 to 146.

RSF has categorized the situation in 180 countries based on their level of press freedom.

According to the organization, the Middle East/North Africa region is still the most dangerous region for journalists, while Europe remains the easiest region for reporters to work.

In 31 countries, the situation is described as “very serious”, in 42 countries it is “difficult”, in 55 countries it is “problematic”, and in 52 countries it is considered “good” or “satisfactory”.

In other words, the environment for journalism is unsatisfactory in 70% of the countries surveyed, while only 30% have a satisfactory situation.

RSF’s Secretary-General, Christophe Deloire, attributes this instability to increased aggressiveness by authorities in many countries and growing animosity towards journalists in both the physical world and social media. Vietnam (178th), China (down four at 179th), and North Korea (180th) occupy the last three places in the rankings, with all three being Asian countries.
