Morocco becomes world's third tomato exporter
Friday 21 April 2023 - 11:39

After previously ranking fifth in the global list of tomato exporters in 2021, Morocco surpassed Iran and Spain to claim third place in 2022, with the biggest growth in exports in a year (more than 17%) among all countries.

Only the Netherlands, where a considerable portion of the supply is re-exported, and Mexico, which focuses on a single market (the United States), outperform Morocco in the world’s top exporters ranking, stated East Fruit media.

Moroccan tomato exports are gradually expanding, with exports to the United Kingdom growing the fastest.

During the winter months, Moroccan supplies to the UK are at their highest. There was a decline in exports in the spring of 2021, but in 2022, Moroccan tomato exporters were able to extend the vegetable sales season, which resulted in an overall annual increase in supply, according to the same source.

Morocco is boldly driving away competitors such as Spain and the Netherlands and, despite the market’s relative complexity, is claiming its place, concluded East Fruit.
