Italy’s right-wing government has declared a six-month national state of emergency on Tuesday to manage the influx of migrants arriving on the country’s southern shores.
The government has approved an initial funding of 5 million euros (nearly $5.5 million) and a special commissioner is expected to be named.
The state of emergency is similar to the one imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, enabling the Cabinet to mandate coping measures by decree, temporarily bypassing the usually lengthy parliamentary process for funding and regulations.
The state of emergency is necessary to reduce congestion at an overwhelmed migrant shelter on a tiny Italian island in the Mediterranean, according to a government statement.
The government also plans to build new structures suitable for sheltering and processing migrants who do not have the requisites to stay in Italy.
