A recent comprehensive study by a team of global researchers led by Marcus Eriksen of the 5 Gyres Institute has found that there are roughly 170 trillion pieces of plastic in our oceans, with most of them being too small to see with the naked eye. According to the study, the amount of plastic entering the oceans has significantly increased over the past 18 years.
To gather data for their study, the researchers analyzed 40 years of data from 11,600 locations in the ocean, and also conducted firsthand observations by sailing around the world.
Eriksen noted that between 1979 and 2004 or 2005, the levels of plastic in the ocean remained fairly steady. However, since 2005, there has been a massive increase in the abundance of microplastics in the ocean. This is an alarming trend that highlights the urgent need for action to prevent further pollution of our oceans.
