Morocco became the second watermelon supplier to the European Union, beating Italy who’s in third place, while Spain remains in first place.

According to data cited by Hortoinfo media from the statistical service Euroestacom, Icex-Eurostat, Spanish watermelon sales in the EU decreased by 22.98% in 2018 compared to 2019, totaling 156.67 million kilos less, while Moroccan sales increased by 81.74%, totaling 121.83 million kilos more.

The Kingdom is now the second largest supplier of watermelons to the EU, pushing Italy to third position in the market as a result of a decline in Italian watermelon sales in the EU markets and an increase in Moroccan sales.

Greece is the fourth-largest exporter of watermelons to the EU, with 136.35 million kilos, 49.63 million euros, and an average price of 0.36 euros per kilo.

With a volume supplied in 2022 of 90.13 million kilos sold for a value of 96.16 million euros and an average price of 1.07 euros per kilo, the Netherlands completes the quartet of suppliers that sell the most watermelons in the EU.

Morocco’s fruit exports have been dominating the news lately.

Its fresh strawberry exports in 2022 broke all prior records, as the country shipped out 22,400 tonnes, 17% more than in 2021 and approximately 1,000 tonnes more than the previous high point in 2019.

Morocco is also still expanding its presence in the global frozen raspberry market and has now caught up to Ukraine, causing a shock factor.
