The World Happiness Report 2023, published in commemoration of the International Day of Happiness, ranked 137 countries, with Morocco finishing in the 100 position – indicating that it’s not a particularly happy nation.
The ten unhappiest countries according to the report, from the bottom to the top are Zambia, Tanzania, Comoros, Malawi, Botswana, Congo, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Lebanon, and Afghanistan.
Palestine and Iraq both surpassed Morocco in the ranking.
As evidenced by data from the report for the year 2022, there was a global upsurge in charitable deeds in 2020, particularly in 2021. Pro-social deeds are still roughly one-quarter more common today than they were before the pandemic.
The research made numerous observations, one of which was the disparities in happiness between the top and bottom quartiles of each nation’s population over the same time period, with Morocco coming in at number 96.
“Our main technique is to calculate trends in all these same variables separately for the more and less happy halves of each national population,” said the report, explaining that a higher ranking means a lower happiness inequality.
The World Happiness Report utilizes subjective life evaluations as a central measuring tool to calculate well-being, with positive and negative emotions playing important mediating roles in its rankings.
The evidence thus far revealed that multiple distinct kinds of life evaluation, including the Cantril ladder and being satisfied with life in general, all gave comparable conclusions concerning the origins of well-being, despite the fact that data were sparse in many nations.
Income, health, having someone to count on, having a sense of freedom to make key life decisions, generosity, and the absence of corruption all played strong roles in supporting the evaluation.
It’s noteworthy that the effectiveness of a government has a major influence on the happiness of its people.
“A population will only experience high levels of overall life satisfaction if its people are also pro-social, healthy, and prosperous. In other words, its people must have high levels of what Aristotle called ‘eudaimonia’. So at the level of society, life satisfaction and eudaimonia go hand-in-hand,” concluded the report.
As for its top ten happiest countries, World Happiness Report ranked them as follows: Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Israel, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Luxembourg, New Zealand.
