The PJD said in a rebuttal to a statement from King Mohammed VI that reproached the Islamist party for criticizing ties with Israel that its comments were directed towards Foreign minister Nasser Bourtia, and not towards the nation’s international interests.
The party said it was not embarrassed by the King’s scorn, but condemned what it called “a campaign that sought to insult it.”
“The General Secretariat confirms that its latest communiqué does not deviate from the party’s firm and frequent positions in supporting the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people and rejecting normalization,” said Secretary General of PJD, Abdelilah Benkirane in a statement on Wednesday.
The PJD’s controversial statement accused Bourita of “defending the Zionist entity” during meetings with African and European officials.
The statement was alluding to Bourita’s remarks during a recent meeting with the European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi in which he talked about tripartite regional cooperation and the opportunities that it grants for development between Morocco, the European Commission and Israel.
Benkirane, whose party was in power when Morocco made the historic decision to normalize relations with Israel in December 2020 said: “As the Israeli occupation continues its criminal aggression against our Palestinian brothers, particularly in Nablus, Morocco’s foreign minister appears to be a defender of Israel.”
In Wednesday’s statement, Benkirane said his initial criticism was constitutional and in fulfillment of partisan and national duty.
