The District Court in the Netherlands has given its approval on Thursday for the extradition of 29-year-old Dutch-Moroccan Achraf B to Morocco, a suspect in the Marengo liquidation trial.
According to the Dutch press, it is now up to Security Minister Dilan Yesilgöz (VVD) to make the final decision on his extradition.
Ashraf B. is a suspect in the so-called Marengo trial in the Netherlands, which involves main suspect Ridouan Taghi.
Last year, the public prosecutor requested a life sentence for the suspect.
In Morocco, he is suspected of being involved in the Cafe La Crème shooting in Marrakech, during which the son of a Moroccan judge was killed in 2017.
“The real target was someone else,” said Dutch media. The Dutch-Moroccan maintained his innocence despite the allegations against him.
He assured the Dutch justice that the prosecution by Morocco would be based on “political motives.” His lawyers argued that there was “a clear violation of the right to a fair trial” in Morocco.
The judge, however, disagreed, stating that Morocco had supported the extradition request with the appropriate documents, refuting accusations of political persecution or unfair trial.
The “Marengo trial” has been progressing in the Netherlands since July 10, 2019, in which 17 defendants were convicted for their involvement in the mafia organization of Ridouan Taghi and the Dutch-Moroccan organized crime called Mocro Mafia.
