French senate raises legal retirement age to 64

The French Senate on Wednesday evening approved the key article of the pension reform bill, raising the legal retirement age from 62 to 64. The vote was taken by 201 votes to 115, out of 345 voters, after heated debates between senators from the right and the left.

The Conference of Presidents added a new weapon to the arsenal to speed up the debate on Tuesday, deciding to limit the speeches and explanations of vote on the article to one speaker per group until the end of the examination of the bill. According to the government’s plan, the legal retirement age will be gradually raised from 62 to 64, at a rate of three months per year, from September 1, 2023 to 2030.

The debates in the Senate must resume this Thursday around a controversial amendment that argues for the gradual disappearance of the special regimes, voted in Article 2, that apply to employees already in office.

The adoption of this article comes the day after the sixth day of strikes and mobilizations Tuesday, which saw between 1.28 and 3.5 million demonstrators across France, according to the Ministry of the Interior and the unions.

The inter-union group of the main French unions, which met on Tuesday at the end of the sixth day of mobilization against the pension reform, called for two new days of demonstrations on Saturday, March 11, and Wednesday, March 15, the day of the presentation of the reform project to the Joint Commission.

As a result of the unions’ mobilization, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC) has asked the airlines to reduce their flight schedules on Thursday and Friday, while the SNCF (railways) is expecting traffic disruptions on these two days.
