High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, rejected a proposal to create a special division to follow up on the Sahara issue.

“The developments in Western Sahara are followed by the European External Action Service (EEAS) for relations with the Maghreb countries and the respective services of the Commission.”

“No change in the organizational chart is planned,” said the head of EU diplomacy yesterday in response to a written question by Spanish MEP Ana Miranda, of the Greens/EFA Group.

Miranda had proposed in late December that “given the unique situation of Western Sahara, there should be a task force within the European External Action Service (EEAS), specifically responsible for this area, which is a non-self-governing territory under international law. Some member states have already set up such structures.”

The pro-Polisario MEP had also invited Josep Borrell to “strengthen relations with Western Sahara.”

In his response, the High Commissioner says: “The European Union is in regular contact with the Personal Envoy, and is ready to accompany his efforts to resume the negotiation process.”

Nabila Masrali, the European Union’s spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy, confirmed in a statement to Hespress AR that “the position of the European Union is clear, and it strongly supports the efforts of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to reach a just, realistic, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara issue.”

The official spokeswoman for the European Union highlighted that “this support is based on a compromise and in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, in particular Resolution 2602 of October 29, 2021.”

The spokeswoman stressed that this was also detailed in the joint political declaration between the European Union and Morocco in June 2019, which pointed positively to the serious and reliable efforts made by Morocco as reflected in the aforementioned decision.

Borrell visited Morocco this January after a short-lived diplomatic crisis, as both Borrell and Bourita agreed to “strengthen cooperation between Morocco and the EU,” stressing the need to protect their partnership.

In a press conference, and following his meeting with the head of foreign policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, Minister Bourita declared that the Kingdom is working to strengthen the partnership with the European Union in various fields.

“The European Union is a key strategic partner for Morocco,” he said, adding that the neighborhood with the European Union offers great opportunities for cooperation.

Josep Borrell affirmed the European Union’s desire to “broaden” and “deepen” the partnership with Morocco, which “is based on values.”
