In a bid to bolster its renewable energy capabilities, Taqa Morocco, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa), has announced plans to invest a staggering $1.6 billion in renewable energy projects in  Morocco.

The company’s plans also include setting up sea water desalination facilities to address water scarcity issues.

Taqa Morocco aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix while also boosting power production to meet the growing domestic demand for electricity.

Taqa Morocco’s chairman, Abdul Majeed Eraqi, revealed the company’s ambitious plans at an energy seminar in Casablanca on Tuesday. Eraqi said that the strategy, which runs until 2030, will involve the construction of new solar plants across Morocco.

“Some projects are already under construction in various parts of the country…we are also exploring the possibility of building a 200 megawatt (MW) solar plant…total investment in these projects is estimated at around $1.6 billion,” Eraqi said during a press conference held on Tuesday in Casablanca

The investment in renewable energy projects is a step towards Morocco’s goal of achieving 52% of its energy mix from renewables by 2030. With Taqa Morocco leading the way, the country is poised to become a key player in the global shift towards clean energy.

Established in 1997, TAQA Morocco is the primary private electricity producer in Morocco. At present, the company runs the biggest coal-fired thermal plant in Africa and the Middle East, situated in the Jorf Lasfar area at the heart of the nation. Comprising six units, the station has a combined output capacity of 2056 megawatts.

The company has solely relied on coal for electricity production since its establishment in 1997. However, in 2023, they intend to broaden their horizons by incorporating coal, gas, and renewable energies into their power generation platform to decrease their carbon footprint.
To combat the country’s water scarcity problem, the company plans to participate in developing combined-cycle plants in coastal cities that are in line with the government’s desalination initiatives.
To fund this new strategy, TAQA Morocco will utilize its own resources, in addition to debt financing, and establish subsidiaries to oversee the proposed projects.
