International military sources revealed that L3Harris Technologies has completed the electronic warfare system design project for the Moroccan F-16 aircraft during the recent visit of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff to Morocco.

Lockheed Martin and the US Air Force chose L3 Harris Technologies to develop the Viper Shield EW system for the F-16 Block 70/72 fighter in 2021.

The American company announced that the electronic warfare system had passed the preliminary tests, emphasizing that the Viper Shield was designed to provide the fighter with a virtual electronic shield.

According to Defense magazine, a military affairs publication, this system will improve military aircraft protection, pointing out that the electronic warfare system was originally developed by L3 Harris engineers to modify Block 70/72, which is available for export.

The same source emphasized that “this system will provide enhanced offensive and defensive capabilities for the F-16 Block 70/72 combat aircraft, which will positively affect the Moroccan Air Force’s fighter fleet.

“The company has completed the contract requirements, and these systems can now be exported to six countries, including Morocco,” according to the source. The first Moroccan Air Force F-16 Block 72 Viper fighters are expected to leave the factory in 2024, with deliveries beginning in early 2025.

All new Viper fighters, including Moroccan, Bahraini, and Jordanian F-16s, will be outfitted with the Viper Shield electronic warfare system, according to L3 Harris. The system is intended to meet the challenge of previously unimagined future threats that the F-16 fighters of the next generation will face. L3 Harris developed the AN/ALQ-254(V)1 in collaboration with Lockheed Martin and the US Air Force to provide advanced countermeasures to US allies against ever-changing threats.

The advanced electronic warfare system will create a virtual electronic shield around the aircraft, allowing combat aircraft to fly missions in increasingly complex combat scenarios safely. Its cutting-edge digital technology improves system performance, reduces system footprint, reduces weight, and allows for future upgrades.
