Oman becomes latest Arab country to allow Israeli airlines to fly over the country

Oman has opened its airspace to all carriers that meet the civil aviation authority’s requirements, enabling Israeli airlines to fly over the country and shorten their flight times to Asia.

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen expressed gratitude to Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said for the decision.

Last year, Saudi Arabia allowed Israeli airlines to use its airspace, but since Omani airspace was closed, Israeli carriers were unable to use the route to fly to Asia. The Saudi Arabian decision came after a visit by US President Joe Biden to the region.

Despite having no diplomatic relations, Israel and Oman have previously demonstrated a willingness to improve their ties, with the late Sultan Qaboos receiving Netanyahu in Muscat in 2018.
