Maternal mortality rates have either remained stagnant or risen in almost every region of the world over the past five years, according to a recent report from the World Health Organization.
The report, authored by epidemiologist Dr. Jenny Cresswell, revealed that an estimated 287,000 women died globally from maternal causes in 2020, equating to nearly 800 deaths every day or a death every two minutes.
This represents a stark reversal of the significant progress made between 2000 and 2015 to reduce maternal deaths, and underscores the existing disparities in access to healthcare that continue to threaten global maternal health.
