Morocco’s Foreign affairs minister, Nasser Bourita said Friday Morocco rejects Israeli plans for a major expansion of settlements in occupied Palestinian lands.

“Bourita expressed the Kingdom of Morocco’s rejection of the Israeli rejection of the Israeli government’s decision to intensify and legalize settlements, as well as all unilateral measures that undermine the chances of peace,” he told Lord Ahmad Tariq, British Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs for South and Central Asia, North Africa, the United Nations and the Commonwealth in a phone conversation.

He also expressed Morocco’s concern about their impact on security and stability in the region.

Israel on Sunday said it will legalize nine West Bank outposts and reported plans to move ahead with the construction of 10,000 settlement units.

“The minister also recalled the determinants of the constant position of the Kingdom of Morocco, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, reaffirming the Kingdom’s commitment to the two-state solution, as agreed at the international level, to establish the foundations of peace and stability, the statement concluded,” said a statement from the foreign ministry.

US, France, UK, Jordan and Egypt, Saudi Arabia and others expressed concern and opposition to the new settlement plans.

The settlements Israel has established on land it won in a conflict with Arab nations in 1967 are viewed as illegitimate by the majority of foreign powers. Israel rejects that and cites security reasons as well as connections to the West Bank in the Bible and history as justification.
