On February 12, Algeria claimed that Morocco and Israel launched a joint cyberattack on the official Algerian News Agency website.

According to Algerian state television, the website had been the target of a string of major cyberattacks for hours as hackers attempted to access the site. Many tried to browse the website and found no data available indicating that there was something wrong.

The Algerian Press Service (APS) emphasized that various language editions of their website had been subject to a series of serious cyberattacks aimed at hacking it for several hours.

Middle East Monitor Media, quoting “an informed source,” said the attacks were planned by “Israel, Morocco, and some regions in Europe.”

However, the agency’s defensive strategies and technological tools enabled it to rebuff the continuous attack and avoid efforts to breach its database, it explained.

According to the same source, the cyberattacks are part of a media and electronic assault on Algeria as a result of its critical attitudes and decisions, as well as the agency’s support for such an approach.

In March 2022, Alegria’s justice ministry said its verified Twitter account was hacked by Moroccans after posts surfaced claiming support for the Russian military operation in Ukraine, and accusing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of “Naziism and the murder of his own citizens.”

Moroccan officials did not respond to the allegations, as it has come to be the case with the many incidents Algerian officials have blamed Morocco for.

In a 2019 ranking by Comparitech, a website specialized in internet security, Algeria ranked the world’s least cyber-secure country, lacking legislation and computer malware rates, and obtained a high score in mobile malware and preparation for cyber-attacks.

And in august 2022, Moroccan hackers have undertaken an unprecedented retaliation campaign, following a cyberattack from Algeria that targeted the University of Sciences Dhar El Mahraz of Fez (FSDM).
