Morocco is committed to the global process relating to the implementation of conventions and international mechanisms in the field of environmental preservation, sustainable development and food security, said Saturday in Cairo, the first Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mohamed Sabbari.

Speaking at the opening of the 5th Conference of Arab Parliament, Sabbari highlighted the growing interest of Morocco in the issue of food security, referring in this sense the message sent by HM King Mohammed VI at the Expo Milan 2015, in which the Sovereign had stressed that “the real challenge today is to ensure, to all peoples a healthy and balanced nutrition, through efficient sustainable development and cooperation in food and energy. This is precisely the choice we have made. It is necessary, it is effective: we are convinced of it”.

Based on this principle that Morocco has adopted by conviction, the Kingdom is also aware that the crisis, although global, remains Arab too, he added, explaining that it has its causes and its Arab indicators, as well as aspects of internal impediments that threaten stability and Arab security.

Morocco remains committed to everything that serves the common Arab interest, anticipates the unified Arab future, strengthens the front of hope and cohesion of the components of the Nation and pushes back the danger and causes of fraction, conflict and despair, he said during this session devoted to the examination of the document prepared by the Arab Parliament on the problem of food security, on a parliamentary vision for strengthening Arab food security.

On the other hand, the First Vice President of the House of Representatives welcomed the initiative of the Arab Parliament on the development of a parliamentary vision for strengthening Arab food security, saying that this initiative is not just a slogan but an expression of a real need requiring collective reflection, mobilization of common energies and unity of the entire Arab nation.

The development of this reference document, which is able to institutionalize dialogues and practical approaches, is a starting point for a more comprehensive vision at the 5th session of the Arab Summit on Economic and Social Development to be held in Mauritania, he noted, adding that the document can also contribute to the reflection and proposals for the development of an Arab strategy for food security.

The issue of food and development has now emerged as a major challenge, said Mr. Sabbari, noting that it requires interest and a sense of responsibility, especially in the wake of major changes threatening peace, stability and security, including food security.

In this sense, he recalled the crisis of Covid-19 which has just ended and whose effects are still felt, as well as the Russian-Ukrainian crisis and its economic, social and humanitarian impacts.

This crisis is in addition to those currently facing the world, such as the climate crisis, the migration crisis, human trafficking, arms and drug trafficking, as well as organized crime, added Mr. Sabbari, also referring to armed conflicts and issues of economic, social, political, cultural, spiritual and moral development.
