Walili’s refugee camp in Nijar Almeria, Spain, burned down on Monday, the day of its intended eviction, causing its occupants to leave before firefighters could extinguish the flames.
The camp contained approximately 500 people, including Moroccans. Nearly all worked in fields.
However, according to the Almera delegation of the Association for Human Rights of Andalusia (APDHA), a week before the fire, the majority had been migrating to other camps among the fifty that exist in the same municipality, as stated in numerous Spanish media.
ereThe camp was located on a road recently taken by tourists visiting the area.
The fire began almost simultaneously with the eviction. When the authorities began to tell the people that they needed to vacate the camp, the smoke rose and they had to flee quickly.
According to El Confidential news, emptying the community took less than ten minutes.
More than fifty agents, supported by a helicopter from the air, had the mission of “guaranteeing people’s safety, said El Pais media. Apparently, most of the migrants were of Moroccan and Senegalese origin.
Several fire trucks responded to the scene and extinguished the fire throughout the morning. People who fled the camp cabins mostly went to an emergency center approved by the City Council for a short stay while they examine other options.
