Telecommunications giant “Orange Morocco” has decided to invest in the undersea cable infrastructure in the Nador Region, the longest submarine cable system in the Mediterranean, to strengthen Morocco’s capacity for digital exchanges in Africa and its digital sovereignty.
Hendrik Kasteel, Orange Morocco’s CEO, said “We are particularly proud to contribute to the trans-Mediterranean digital connectivity project by deploying the landfall and submarine cable infrastructure in the Nador region, which will connect Morocco to the countries of North Africa and Europe from the South involved in this project.”
Orange Morocco is a component of the Kingdom’s strategy to quicken Morocco’s digital transformation in line with the New Development Model’s (NMD) aspirations.
The long-term goal is to make Morocco a recognized Digital & Technological Hub in Africa, with a focus on a considerable improvement in the ranking of the United Nations Online Service Index (the objective is to be part of the top 3 in Africa and to be among the top 40 globally).
The CEO explained that by joining the company’s fiber optic network to the Nador system in the Mediterranean, “we will strengthen Morocco’s attractiveness as a digital gateway to Africa while confirming Morocco’s digital sovereignty.”
Orange Morocco will help build the first submarine cable to link the major Mediterranean nations through the completion of this project in collaboration with the Medusa project.
The system will link the two shores and feature 16 landing locations throughout other nations, including Morocco. Orange Morocco will distribute this new infrastructure to operators who want to use it as part of its open innovation strategy.
