Alphabet, the parent company of Google, announced Friday that it will cut 12,000 jobs, or 6% of its workforce, in the latest round of layoffs to rock the technology industry.
The layoffs will affect roles across product areas and regions, according to CEO Sundar Pichai in an email to employees posted on the company’s website Friday.
Employees in the United States who are affected will be kept on the company’s payroll for 60 days and will receive at least 16 weeks’ pay in severance, in addition to other benefits.
Alphabet increased its workforce by more than 50,000 employees over the last two years, owing to increased demand for its services during the pandemic. However, the company’s core digital ad business has slowed in recent quarters as the economic downturn and recession fears have caused advertisers to cut back.
